Ethan S. Tan
Hello 👋 ! I’m Ethan, a recent graduate of the University of San Francisco, where I received my bachelor's degree in Political Science and minored in Asian Studies, Asian Pacific American Studies, and Public Service & Community Engagement.
I currently serve in the Biden-Harris Administration, appointed as a Researcher at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in the Office of Public Affairs. Previously, I was an intern and contractor at the U.S. Department of Defense, Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Legislative Affairs working on the Strategic Communications Team.
In college, I was on the masthead of the San Francisco Foghorn, USF’s newspaper, where I was the News Editor and managed the flagship section and oversaw investigations. Even as an editor, I still covered University affairs, which encompassed University policies and accountability of its various institutions and offices. Check out my clips on MuckRack. Before managing a section, I caught spelling and grammar errors as the Chief Copy Editor overseeing the paper's fact-checking and research operation, in addition to ensuring all content adhered to both AP style and our in-house style.
During the most recent presidential election cycle, I made history by working to elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as president and vice president as a member of the campaign's Vetting Team. In addition to being a full-time GOTV captain and Voicemail Coordinator during the last weeks of the campaign. (Check out this cool day-in-the-life!)
Before that though, I spent a year as an Autonomous Vehicle Policy Research Intern at the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), Office of Innovation, where I helped analyze data and conducted research around various topics in the AV industry, from disengagement reports to regulatory changes. I also helped produce and edit communications from the SFMTA to the public and other government agencies.
My passions are in national security, civic engagement, public service, transportation policy, planning, politics, and journalism. Outside of the office, you’ll either find me outdoors hiking, playing tennis, grabbing brunch in the city, or exploring new places or even volunteering with the Leo T. McCarthy Center for Public Service and the Common Good.
